Training for Senior Army Officers on Drug Related Matters

The demand reduction unit of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) On Thursday, 12 September 2019 delivered lectures on the mandates, functions and effects of illicit drug trafficking and abuse to senior officer of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) at the Gambia Armed Forces Training School (GAFTS) at Fajara Barracks, Bakau.

Mr. Dawda Sanyang and Lamin K. Jobarteh made presentations on behalf of DLEAG.

Presentations centered on a brief history of DLEAG, functions of DLEAG as provided for in section 15 of the Drug Control Act (DCA) 2003 Revised Laws of The Gambia, Drug abuse situation in The Gambia and summary presentation on the universal prevention curriculum (UPC).

 

The Commandant of GAFTS expressed appreciation for the partnership and urged participants to make the best use of the knowledge gained from the presentation.

DLEAG Organizes Drug Control Bill Popularization Workshop

Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as part of the ECOWAS Drug Project organised a two days’ popularization workshop on the Drug Control Bill. Organised at the Ocean Bay hotel in Bakau from the 26th to 27th September 2019, the workshop targeted Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s), Youth groups and Journalists.

Gambia Commemorate International Day Against Drug Abuse

The Gambia on June 26, 2019, joined the international community to commemorate the international day against drug abuse, illicit drug trafficking and other related crimes. The day was set aside by United Nations General Assembly in December 1987.

The global theme for this year’s commemoration is health for justice and justice for health. However, on the local front, the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) and partners maintain the Listen First Campaign as the local theme.

DLEAG Boss Warns Against Harboring Drug Traffickers

Bakary Gassama, the Director General of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG), has underscored his agency’s readiness to work with partners in their quest to intensify and strengthen their interdiction and supply suppression mechanisms.

“To those harbouring drug dealers and traffickers, your days are numbered. Sooner than you expect, either the law will catch up with you or you will become a victim of your own doing and the architect of your own destruction,” he warned.

Gassama was speaking yesterday during the opening of a two-day sensitisation of stakeholders on the effects of illicit drug trafficking and abuse held at the NaNA conference hall. The two days convergence funded by the European Union under a Grant to the ECOWAS Commission brought together selected youth and community based organisations.

DLEAG and Relevant Stakeholders Capacirated on Substance Use Disorder Treatment

On Tuesday 16th April 2019 selected participants from The Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG), Ministry of Health, Department of Social Welfare, Religious Leaders, Supportive Activist Foundation (SAF), Journalist Against Illicit Drug Trafficking and Organised Crime (JAIDTOC) etc completed the second cycle of Training of the Trainers (ToT) on the Universal Substance Use Disorder Treatment Curriculum (UTC) at the Senegambia Beach Hotel from the 8 - 16 April 2019.

This cycle of the training covered UTC 3 (Common Co- Occurring Medical and Mental Disorders - An Overview for Addiction Professionals) and UTC 4 (Basic Counseling Skills for Addiction Professionals.

The training was organized by DLEAG in partnership with the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program (DAP) with support from the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).

UNODC Organizes Training on Criminal Intelligence Analysis for Gambian Law Enforcement Officers

As part of it strategy to enhance national capacities to detect and investigate cross border organised crime in The Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Senegal, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with funding from German Government organised a two weeks training program on criminal intelligence analysis for law enforcement officers in The Gambia. Operatives from the Drug Law Enforcement Agency the Gambia (DLEAG), The Gambia Police Force (GPF), State Intelligence Services (SIS) and The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) were trained on skills and techniques in Criminal Intelligence Analysis from the 9th to 20th July 2018 at the Ocean Bay Hotel in Bakau.

Drug Destruction Day 2017

DRUG LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY THE GAMBIA CONDUCTS ANNUAL DRUG DESRTUCTION EXERCISE

The Drug Law enforcement Agency the Gambia (DLEAG) on Thursday 20th April 2017 conducted a public drug destruction exercise at the Cape point Bakau.

The exercise was witnessed by the Honourable Minister of Interior Mai Ahmad Fatty, representative of the Speaker of the National Assembly, representative of Sectary General, representatives of the Attorney General, members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, Inspector General of Police Yankuba Sonko and representatives of Service Chief’s, members of the press and DLEAG staffs etc

DLEAG Activities

The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) is the lead Government Security Outfit legally mandated to regulate and control Drug Abuse, Illicit Drug Trafficking and related activities by enforcing the Drug Control Act 2003 and all international protocols and conventions relative to drugs signed and ratified by The Gambia.

In ensuring that it effectively polices drug abuse and trafficking, the Agency has deployed operatives across the length and breadth of The Gambia.

DLEAG Regional Offices and other specialized units work closely in monitoring drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking and responding to any given circumstance accordingly.

The Director of Operations coordinates the operational activities of the Agency and reports accordingly to the Director General through the deputy Director General 2 (Operations).
